Sisällön kuvaus

The study investigated the leisure time, hobbies, interpersonal relationships, school life and future plans of young people attending schools located in Helsinki, Finland. The dataset is part of City of Helsinki's longitudinal study in which surveys have been conducted every ten years since 1980.

The respondents were first asked questions about their leisure time and hobbies. Views were probed on, for example, how much leisure time the respondents felt they had, what they did in their leisure time and how much time they spent in different activities (e.g. watching TV, surfing the Internet). The respondents were also asked how often they engaged in a wide range of different activities and hobbies, whether they shared any hobbies with their parents, and whether they had ever had to give up a hobby and for what reason.

The respondents' interpersonal relationships were charted. The respondents were asked whether they had been feeling lonely in the past year, whether they were dating, how many close friends they had and how often they kept in contact with their friends by different means (e.g. meeting, email, Facebook). Further questions probed, among others, who was their closest family member, what the atmosphere in their family was like and whether they discussed different things with their parents (e.g. curfews, friends, Internet use).

Relating to school life, the respondents were asked how they liked going to school, what they thought their performance at school was like, how often they played truant and whether they were afraid of going to school. Future fears and expectations were charted as well as future study plans.

Background variables included the respondent's gender, age, mother tongue, living arrangements, municipality of residence, grade level and parents' education levels and employment statuses.

The sample schools (56) were selected based on two earlier surveys, in both of which the sample was selected by an expert council familiar with the schools under the City of Helsinki Education Department. Firstly, the sample was based on the schools participating in the 2000 survey of Young People in Helsinki. Some of the schools were also involved in the 1990 survey. Secondly, the sample was based on the schools participating in the 2010 Client Survey conducted by the City of Helsinki Youth Department. The schools had been selected for the client survey by the expert council to represent Helsinki in miniature, using a broad range of criteria, such as neighbourhood, school, and school type (e.g. specialist schools). Additionally, schools were selected from the new neighbourhood of Östersundom in Eastern Helsinki, using the same criteria.

The principals of the selected schools were contacted by phone and were sent cover letters. Responses were received from 42 schools, resulting in the response rate of 75% for schools. The response rate for the units of observation, i.e. pupils, was 71.7%.

Aineiston käytössä huomioitavaa

Of the three vocational upper secondary schools selected for the study, responses were received from only one. This should be taken into consideration when examining the responses of vocational school students. In addition, girls are overrepresented in the data.

During the archiving process, identifiers were removed from the data (the respondent's school and postal code). Open-ended questions were also removed in question group q1 relating to language and q65 and q66 relating to parents'/custodians' countries of birth. In addition, variable q6 containing open-ended responses on the municipality of residence was modified in order to remove identifying information. Only the name of the municipality has been retained and more specific information (neighbourhood, street) was removed. Some responses contained deviating municipality names, and these names were modified to correspond to the standard ones.
