Sisällön kuvaus

The survey was conducted to study the identity and television viewing among young people in three separate language minorities in Italy, Romania and Finland. The language minorities included German-speaking people in Italy, Hungarian speakers in Romania, and Swedish speakers in Finland. The questions were about both the minority language and the majority language.

The respondents were first asked which language(s) they used at home, with friends and in daily life. They were also asked how many of their friends were minority language speakers and majority language speakers. Regarding television watching, the respondents were asked the language in which they watched TV, which language subtitles they used when watching foreign films, how often they watched TV channels in the minority and majority languages, how much they watched TV in general, and what their reasons for watching TV in the minority or majority language were.

Concerning language identity, several of statements were presented charting, for instance, the respondents' views of the majority language speakers, the status of their language minority, the relationship between the minority and majority language groups, and the importance of language as part of their identity.

Finally, the respondents were asked about their views of the minority and majority language groups in more detail. Topics charted included the use of the minority and majority languages in the public sector of the region, public opinion of the minority and majority groups, political power of the minority and majority language groups, and representation of the minority and majority languages in the media of the region.

Background variables included the respondent's gender and geographical variables (e.g. country and region of residence) as well as parents' mother tongue and education.

Non-probability: Availability

The invitation to participate was sent to upper secondary schools where minority language was used and which were in regions where minority language was common compared to the rest of the country. The regions were South Tyrol in Italy, Transylvania in Romania and Uusimaa in Finland. Students of the participating schools responded to a paper survey. The data were collected on 27 and 28 October 2011 in Italy, on 4 and 26 October 2011 in Romania, and on 25 October and 9 November in Finland. The responses of a total of 1,279 respondents are included in the archived data (400 from Finland, 478 from Italy and 401 from Romania).

Aineiston käytössä huomioitavaa

Data from all of the countries studied were combined into one dataset. The data were collected in the minority language in each country: in Swedish in Finland, in German in Italy, and in Hungarian in Romania. The archived data are available in English. Because the data were translated at FSD based mainly on supplementary material from the researcher and the Swedish questionnaire, accuracy of translation cannot be guaranteed. However, efforts were made to take differences between the country-specific survey questions into account and ensure the translations correspond to the original questions as closely as possible. A questionnaire in English is available in the additional material, but some of the questions differ from the variables in the data, because the varying content of each country-specific questionnaire is reflected in the variables. Original questionnaires in each minority language are also available.

The survey was targeted at people who speak a minority language, but there were some respondents who spoke the majority language or some other language besides the minority language. The archived data contain the responses of all respondents, which is why the frequency distributions are not identical to the original research publication based on the data (see Related materials: Vincze, Laszlo 2013); the distributions in the publication only include the respondents who spoke the minority language.

Some variables (i13_1, r13_1, i13_3, r13_3, i13_4, r13_4) in question 13 were removed from the data due to unclear coding.
