Abstract

The data contain newspaper articles that deal with different forms of amateur naturalism, published in the Tampere region between 1972 and 2011. The articles can be divided into four categories: 1) observations of nature, amateur naturalism, and nature databases, 2) renovation of water bodies important to birds, 3) Natural History Museum of Tampere, and 4) general naturalism. The articles vary in style, and include editorials and letters to the editor in addition to news items.

The data files have been organised by theme and magazine in such a way that one file contains all the texts of the same theme from one magazine. A detailed list of the articles has been published as a related file.

This dataset is only available in Finnish.

Sampling Procedure

Non-probability: Purposive

The articles were collected from the newspapers Aamulehti and Lempäälä-Vesilahden Sanomat. Furthermore articles from the following magazines published by organizations and associations have been included in the data: Lintuviesti of Pirkanmaan lintutieteellinen yhdistys, Lutukka of Finnish Museum of Natural History, Talvikki of Tampereen kasvitieteellinen yhdistys, Linnut of Birdlife Finland, Diamina of Tampereen hyönteistutkijain seura, Lounais-Hämeen Luonto of Lounais-Hämeen luonnonsuojeluyhdistys, Museoon! published by the museums of Tampere, Tampereen seudun luonto of Suomen luonnonsuojeluliiton Tampereen yhdistys ry, and Tammerkoski of Tampere-seura. Additionally the data contain one online article from Yle News, and one blog post dealing with ornithology.

Specific search phrases were used to search for texts from the archive of Aamulehti. All the articles were chosen on purpose, and not all of articles that the search yielded were chosen. The articles chosen displayed different forms of amateur naturalism and the blend of science and amateur naturalism. The articles were gathered between 2009 and 2010 (Aamulehti and Lempäälä-Vesilahden Sanomat), and between 2008 and 2012 (other sources).

18 textual files in pdf format and 5 in txt format. The data contain 272 texts altoghether.

Completeness of Data and Restrictions

The handwritten markings and strikethroughs in the PDF files have been made by the researcher.

A reference list displaying the texts inside has been added to the start of text collections from the same magazine.

Texts from Lempäälä-Vesijärven Sanomat published in 2002-2003 dealing with Ahtialanjärvi were removed during archiving due to poor photo quality.
