Abstract

The data contain Finnish horse dealers' interviews that examined the impact of the interaction between man and horse on the trade situation. Ethical questions on the wellbeing of horses in horse trading were also studied.

The interviewees were asked about things such as the fulfilment of customers' expectations of horses, the impact of the chemistry between the horse and the customer on the sales process, how the dealers guided the customers, and how the dealers knew whether the horse was suitable for the customer. Furthermore, the dealers were asked to reminisce a successful horse trade, and an instance where they had had to intervene with the choice made by the customer. Lastly, the respondents were asked how often horses were returned to them and how they acted in these situations.

The background information included the date of the interview, as well as the interviewee's age, gender, and the time they had been in the horse dealing industry.

The dataset is only available in Finnish.

Non-probability: Purposive

As diverse a sample as possible was purposively selected out of 50 horse dealers who advertised online. The sample included large and small companies, those who had been in the business for a long time, as well as new entrepreneurs, dealers with different types of horse, breeders, importers, and dealers from different parts of Finland.

The data contain 10 interviews in txt format, as well as an interview frame and an information sheet for the interviewees in pdf format. The combined length of the interviews is 173 pages and the average interview is 17 pages long. In addition, the txt files are also available in html format.

Completeness of Data and Restrictions

The data were anonymized by the researcher. The names and home municipalities of the interviewees and their businesses were removed from the transcriptions. Furthermore, other information that might compromise the anonymity of interviewees, such as names of horses, horse owners, and corporate partners were removed. Information on rarer breeds sold by some dealers was removed due to the fact that not many dealers in Finland sold the same breed.
