Sisällön kuvaus

This dataset consists of counselling session discussions between A-clinic employees and clients regarding the client's substance use and the causes and consequences connected to it. The aim was to record two meetings for each of the 36 clients. The data were collected as part of a research project on the adherence of motivational interviewing in the initial substance abuse setting and its effect on clients' substance abuse harm reduction (the MISA project), funded by the Academy of Finland.

This qualitative dataset consists of transcriptions of the client meeting discussions. This dataset can be connected to the quantitative dataset FSD3367 Substance Abuse Treatment in Outpatient Clinics: Pre- and Post-treatment Surveys 2007-2010, which consists of pre-treatment surveys, evaluations of the client meeting discussions by both the A-clinic counsellor and the client, and post-treatment surveys. The respondents in the two datasets can be connected with a unique client number.

The discussions examined the client's objectives regarding their substance use and their motivation to stop or reduce their use of substances. The counsellors and clients also discussed the client's situation in life more widely, focusing on their family, employment and health. During the meetings, the clients completed the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), which was then discussed between the counsellor and client. The client's need for medication, rehabilitation or other support as part of their treatment plan was also charted during the discussions. Most of the clients in the data identify alcohol as their principal opiate, but the data include users of cannabis, amphetamine and buprenorphine as well.

Background information for this dataset included the following information based on the quantitative dataset: unique client number, date of client meeting, categorised age of the client, the client's gender, marital status, principal opiate and whether the client had children. The data were organised into an easy to use HTML version at FSD.

The dataset is only available in Finnish.
