This dataset consists of 28 texts on Finnish experiences and memories of travelling with the Interrail pass between the 1970s and the present. The Interrail pass is a rail pass that allows unlimited rail travel in 33 countries in Europe for European residents. The data were collected in collaboration between researcher Mikko Manka and the Finnish Literature Society (SKS) in 2018.

In the invitation to write, the respondents were asked to describe the preparations for their journey, feelings they had had during and after travelling, and the experiences and memories they had regarding, for example, the accommodations they had stayed at and the people they had met during their travels. Additionally, the respondents were asked to discuss what they had learned from Interrailing, what their travels meant to them now and how they had seen Finland and Europe at the time of their travels.

Some respondents sent pictures from their travels along with the writings, and 19 pictures were archived at FSD.

Background information included the respondent's name or pseudonym, occupation, date of birth, area of residence and gender. The data were organised into an easy to use HTML version at FSD.

The dataset is only available in Finnish.

Writing guidelines for the competition were posted on the Finnish Literature Society website. Furthermore, a writing invitation was sent to regular SKS contributors. The text could be delivered using an online form on the SKS website, by e-mail, or by letter.

The data are checked and processed in detail. If necessary, the data are anonymised. Finnish Social Science Data Archive 28 texts in ODT format. Additionally, the data were organised into an easy to use HTML version and a CSV version. 32 texts were received. This dataset consists of the 28 responses where the writer consented to the archiving of their text at FSD. Additionally, some writers sent pictures along with their text. The archived data include 19 pictures. All of the data are archived at the archive of the Finnish Literature Society (SKS). The data may contain identifiers that have not been anonymised (e.g. person names, information on place of residence, names of work places and such). When publishing quotations from the data, users need to consider very carefully in each specific case what information needs to be removed or altered according to research ethical guidelines. The dataset is (B) available for research, teaching and study. The data and its creators shall be cited in all publications and presentations for which the data have been used. The bibliographic citation may be in the form suggested by the archive or in the form required by the publication. Notify FSD of all publications where you have used the data by sending the citation information to user-services.fsd@tuni.fi. The original data creators and the archive bear no responsibility for any results or interpretations arising from the reuse of the data. To prevent identification of the participants, references to the writer's name or other direct references to the personal or contact information of the writer or any third persons were removed during archiving. If necessary, indirect identifiers, such as company names, were removed from the data. Names that appeared in the texts were removed if they occurred once and changed if they occurred more often. Of the pictures sent with the texts, 20 were removed due to copyright issues. Changes made at FSD were marked with [square brackets].
