Sisällön kuvaus

This dataset consists of 65 texts written on Finnish childhood memories of friendship from the 20th Century. Data collection was organised by the Finnish Literature Society and researcher Antti Malinen.

In the writing guidelines, the participants were asked to write about their own childhood, concentrating on themes such as the meaning of friends and what they discussed or did with their friends as a child. Suggested themes to discuss also included bullying, loneliness and the participants' social relationships at school. Additionally, the participants were asked to discuss the influence adults had had on their childhood friendships.

Background information included the participant's name or pseudonym, occupation, year of birth, area of residence and gender. The data were organised into an easy to use HTML version at FSD.

The dataset is only available in Finnish.

Writing guidelines were posted as an open invitation on the Finnish Literature Society website. Furthermore, a writing invitation was sent to regular SKS contributors. The text could be delivered using an online form on the SKS website, by e-mail, or by letter.

To prevent identification of individuals, mentions of writers' names and other direct identifiers were removed. The names of persons mentioned in the texts were either removed or replaced with a pseudonym if they occurred more than once. Changes made at FSD were marked with [square brackets].

102 texts were received. This dataset consists of the 65 responses where the writer consented to the archiving of their text at FSD. Five texts were removed from the data during the archiving process due to reasons of privacy and copyright. Two photographs out of the three sent with the texts were removed before archiving due to copyright issues. The archived data include one photograph. All the texts that were received are stored at the archive of the Finnish Literature Society (SKS).

The data and its creators shall be cited in all publications and presentations for which the data have been used. The bibliographic citation may be in the form suggested by the archive or in the form required by the publication.
