Sisällön kuvaus

The survey charted the medication competence and working life skills of graduating nurses in Finland and the Baltic countries. The survey was conducted as part of the eMedication Passport (eMED-PASS) project, funded by Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership. The goal of the research project was to increase patient and medication safety in partner countries by developing the educational preparation of nurses. The main aim of the project was to test the electronic Medication Passport, developed in Finland, in higher nursing education in the Baltic countries. The digital learning tool was created to support, ensure and assess the development of the required medication competence of nurse graduates. The project was co-funded by the project partners together with Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership. The partners in the project included Turku University of Applied Sciences (Finland), Tartu Health Care College (Coordinator, Estonia), P.Stradins Medical College of the University of Latvia (Latvia), Kauno kolegija/ University of Applied Sciences (Lithuania).

The data consist of survey responses from nursing students in higher education in Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The study included two rounds: a pre-questionnaire conducted before the testing of the eMedication Passport, and then a post-questionnaire conducted after the testing. In Finland, only the pre-questionnaire was conducted.

First, the respondents' perceptions of studies related to medication management were examined with questions on, for example, whether they were satisfied with the amount of medication management education, felt motivated to study related topics, and had actively maintained their medication competence. The respondents were also asked about learning medication management in clinical practice. Questions included, for example, whether they had had enough possibilities to practice medication management in clinical practice, felt they had been expected to have better medication competence than they actually did, and felt that they had had a positive experience with nurse mentors in clinical practice. Finally, the respondents' medication competence was evaluated with a test focusing on medication management legislation and commonly used abbreviations, pharmacology, medication administration, medication calculations, and patient vignettes.

Background variables included the respondent's age, country of residence, year of study, number of clinical practice periods completed, work experience in health care, current job title, grades in examination on theoretical basis of pharmacotherapy, and whether they had passed the medication calculation exam.

Non-probability: Purposive

The questionnaire was sent electronically to all nursing students who had completed at least one semester of studies in either the Finnish or English degree programme at Turku University of Applied Sciences (N=520, students in their first to fourth year of studies). 67 students from the Finnish degree programme (response rate 13%) and 19 students from the English degree programme (response rate 44%) responded to the survey.

In Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, second-year nursing students were selected for the study. Contact persons in the partner universities (Tartu Health Care College, Latvijas Universitates P. Stradina Medicinas koledza and Kauno kolegija / University of Applied Sciences) shared a link to the questionnaire to the students.

The data are in English and consist of the combined responses of students from Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania to the pre- and post-questionnaires. The questionnaires have the same questions, with some exceptions detailed below.

There are eight different respondent groups in the dataset, which can be differentiated with the [qnr] variable. The respondent groups are: 1 = students in the Finnish nursing degree programme in Finland who responded to the pre-questionnaire, 2 = students in the English nursing degree programme in Finland who responded to the pre-questionnaire, 3 = higher education students in a nursing degree programme in Estonia who responded to the pre-questionnaire, 4 = higher education students in a nursing degree programme in Estonia who responded to the post-questionnaire, 5 = higher education students in a nursing degree programme in Latvia who responded to the pre-questionnaire, 6 = higher education students in a nursing degree programme in Latvia who responded to the post-questionnaire, 7 = higher education students in a nursing degree programme in Lithuania who responded to the pre-questionnaire, and 8 = higher education students in a nursing degree programme in Lithuania who responded to the post-questionnaire.

The questionnaires delivered to FSD are in English, Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian. The English questionnaire is the pre-questionnaire that was completed by students in Finland. The other questionnaires are post-questionnaires. There are some differences between the questionnaires. The English pre-questionnaire does not include the last variable of the other questionnaires [q13] "I participated in the pilot study (only in Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian questionnaires)". Additionally, the Estonian and Latvian questionnaires do not include variable [q12_5] "Generic drug substitute must have (only in Finnish and Lithuanian questionnaires)". The variable was replaced with variable [q12_26] "The abbreviation s.c. stands for (only in Estonian and Latvian questionnaires)". The Latvian questionnaire contains variable [q6_4_lt] "Work experience in health care before entering the undergraduate nursing programme: other healthcare professional (e.g. paramedic, pharmacist, etc.) (only in Lithuanian questionnaire)", which was not included in the other questionnaires.

To prevent identification of respondents, the respondent's gender was removed from the data during archiving. Additionally, variables [q1] denoting the respondent's age and [q6_1_1] and [q6_2_1] denoting length of work experience were categorised.
