Abstract

The dataset consists of self-administered written texts written by elderly people who have a disability. The writing invitation was aimed at individuals who are ageing with a disability and individuals with age-related disabilities or handicaps.

In the writing guidelines, the participants were presented with questions that they could use to help guide their writing. The questions prompted the participants to describe their experience of ageing with a disability or the experience of living with age-related disabilities or handicaps. The participants were asked whether they had received adequate support and assistance to manage the challenges posed by their disability, and whether they felt that they were treated differently now that they were elderly or as a result of developing age-related disabilities. Additionally, the participants could write about how disability had impacted their identity, everyday life or hobbies.

Background information included the participant's gender, age group, the disability the participant had, and whether the participant's municipality of residence had deemed them eligible for services for the disabled or the elderly.

The dataset is only available in Finnish.

Completeness of Data and Restrictions

The data were collected for the purposes of academic or literary expression. Some personal data essential for the reuse of the data, such as indirect identifiers referring to the participant, were left in the archived data on purpose. During archiving at FSD, direct and strong indirect identifiers referring to the participants were removed (e.g. personal names, workplace names). Additionally, all direct and indirect identifiers referring to third parties were removed. To prevent identification, one response was removed completely because it was an article previously published by the participant and available online.

One text was removed from the data archived at FSD because the participant did not consent to the archiving of their text. Two responses were removed from the data: one response contained only the participant's background information and the other one was a duplicate of a response that had been submitted twice.
