The Joint Statistics of Finnish Scientific Libraries data series consists primarily of annual statistics on the activities of the libraries of Finnish higher education institutions from the years 2002-2020. The statistics were collected according to the International Standard ISO 2789 International library statistics.

The statistics contain information about the National Library of Finland, Finnish university libraries, and libraries of the universities of applied sciences. Additionally, the statistics of a few special libraries are included in the data for some years. Each library was responsible for collecting their own data. The National Library of Finland was responsible for the maintenance and development of the Research Library Statistics Database, and also instructed the data collection and reviewed the data. The National Library maintained the Research Library Statistics Database 2002-2020 time series online until 2021.

The dataset contains annual statistics from Finnish scientific libraries for 2002 according to international library statistics standards. The dataset covers data and indicators on library premises, branches, collections, services, acquisitions, use, users, opening hours, finances, and staff. The statistical data have been collected from the National Library of Finland, university libraries, university of applied sciences libraries, and a few specialised libraries. The collecting organisations are specified in the data files: the files daF3625_1 (A-L) and daF3625_2 (O-Å) contain data on university libraries and the file daF3625_2 contains data on other scientific libraries.

The Joint Statistics of Scientific Libraries 2002 dataset provides an overview of the resources, collections, and services of Finnish scientific libraries. The statistics are based on international library statistics standards. Each library was responsible for collecting their own data. The National Library of Finland was responsible for the maintenance and development of the Research Library Statistics Database, and instructed the data collection, reviewed the data, and asked the libraries to make corrections where necessary.

Information on library collections, their use and users is usually collected from the database of the library system used by the library. Data on finances, facilities, staff, and training are collected from other sources. There are no weight variables in the data. FSD does not have the user guide for the 2002 data collection, and therefore FSD has no further information on the data collection and its guidelines. Study description in Finnish and English. The data files are generally not processed and are retained in the form they were delivered in by the researcher. If necessary, the archive anonymises the data.
