Aineisto perustuu Twitteriä työssään käyttäville diplomaateille suunnattuun kyselyyn. Kyselyyn vastasi 108 islantilaista, ruotsalaista, suomalaista, tanskalaista ja virolaista diplomaattia.

Kyselyssä kartoitettiin suurlähetystöissä työskentelevien diplomaattien käsityksiä omasta vuorovaikutusosallisuudestaan Twitterissä sekä heidän aktiivisuuttaan twiittaamisen, uudelleentwiittaamisen, tykkäämisen sekä muiden käyttäjien ja uutisten seuraamisen suhteen. Vastaajia pyydettiin myös arvioimaan, miten hyvin heidän oma Twitterin käyttönsä täyttää sille asetetut tavoitteet ja mitä hyötyä Twitter-viestinnästä on heidän edustamansa valtion kannalta.

Kysely perustuu suurelta osin kahden tutkimusmittarin käyttöön. Vuorovaikutusosallisuutta mitattiin 18-osaisella Interaction Involvement Scale:lla, jonka sanoitusta muokattiin Twitter-viestintään sopivaksi. Twitter-viestinnän hyötyjä mitattiin 10-osaisella Public Relations Value Assessment -tutkimusmittarilla, jota myös muokattiin kontekstiin sopivaksi.

Taustamuuttujina aineistossa ovat vastaajan toimipaikka (maantieteellinen alue) sekä tehtävä ja asema omassa suurlähetystössä.

Aineistonkeruun alkuvaiheessa kunkin kohdevaltion ulkoasiainministeriötä lähestyttiin sähköpostitse ja tiedusteltiin mahdollisuutta kerätä aineistoa yhteistyössä heidän kanssaan. Kaikissa tapauksissa tutkimuspyyntö tutkimukseen osallistumisesta toimitettiin vastaajille sähköpostitse. Tutkimuspyynnön yhteydessä osallistujille toimitettiin linkki verkkolomakkeeseen ja tutkimuksen tietosuojailmoitus.

Islannin, Suomen ja Viron kohdalla toimittiin seuraavasti: Tutkimuspyyntö lähetettiin ulkoasiainministeriön edustajan toimesta sellaisille suurlähetystöissä työskenteleville henkilöille, joiden tiedettiin käyttävän työssään Twitteriä.

Ruotsin ja Tanskan osalta toimittiin seuraavasti: Tutkija lähetti tutkimuspyynnön ulkoasiainministeriön luvalla kummankin valtion jokaiseen suurlähetystöön.

Yhteiskuntatieteellinen tietoarkisto Suomalaiset vastaajat ovat aineistossa yliedustettuna. Aineisto on käytettävissä (B) tutkimukseen, opetukseen ja opiskeluun. Aineistoon ja sen tekijöihin tulee viitata asianmukaisesti kaikissa julkaisuissa ja esityksissä, joissa aineistoa käytetään.
