Kysely kartoittaa viherrakenteeseen liittyvissä tehtävissä toimivien henkilöiden näkemyksiä kaupunkiniityistä osana kaupunkien ja kuntien viherrakennetta. Kysely on kerätty osana Helsingin yliopistossa tehtävää väitöskirjatutkimusta, jonka tavoitteena on edistää biodiversiteettiä kaupunkiympäristöissä.

Ensimmäisenä kysyttiin, miten vastaajien nykyinen tai entinen työnkuva liittyy viherrakenteeseen sekä mitä kautta vastaajat saivat tiedon kyselystä. Seuraavaksi vastaajilta tiedusteltiin heidän näkemystään siitä, mitä hyötyjä kaupunkiniityt tuottavat osana viherrakennetta. Tämän jälkeen kyselyssä kartoitettiin eri väittämien avulla vastaajien näkemyksiä kaupunkiniittyjen esteettisistä, sosiaalisista ja ekologisista ominaisuuksista. Väittämät koskivat muun muassa kaupunkiniittyjen siisteyden vaatimuksia, pölyttäjäystävällisyyttä, lajiston monipuolisuutta sekä niittyjen käyttöä virkistykseen ja kohtaamispaikkoina.

Seuraavaksi vastaajia pyydettiin esittämään keinoja, joilla luonnon monimuotoisuutta voitaisiin edistää kaupunkiniityillä, sekä pohtimaan näihin keinoihin liittyviä haasteita ja niiden ratkaisuja. Tämän jälkeen vastaajia pyydettiin arvioimaan, missä määrin he pystyvät itse omassa työssään vaikuttamaan luonnon monimuotoisuuteen kaupunkiniityillä. Lisäksi vastaajia pyydettiin arvioimaan muiden toimijoiden, kuten poliittisten päätöksentekijöiden, tutkimuksen, viheralueiden suunnittelun ja rakentamisen mahdollisuuksia vaikuttaa monimuotoisuuden suojeluun.

Taustamuuttujia aineistoissa ovat vastaajan ikä, sukupuoli, vastauskieli, vastausaika, työnkuva ja työvuosien määrä.

Kysely oli suunnattu kaikille, joiden nykyinen tai aiempi työ liittyy viherrakenteeseen. Kyselyn kutsulinkkiä jaettiin julkisen sektorin työntekijöille suorilla sähköposteilla sekä erilaisilla sähköpostilistoilla. Lisäksi kyselykutsua levitettiin Viherympäristö-lehden ilmoituksella, jonka kautta myös yksityisen sektorin työntekijöillä oli mahdollisuus vastata kyselyyn.
