The data consist of written responses to the 'Experiences of Encounters with Wild Animals' memory collection. In the writings, Finns recount their memories and experiences of encounters with wild animals.

The writing invitation asked respondents to describe their experiences and memories of encounters with wild animals. Respondents could focus on everyday or unexpected encounters and the emotions evoked by them. Several questions were provided to support the writing process, asking, for example, about the kinds of places and situations in which the respondent had encountered wild animals and whether they had been warned about certain animals or places.

Background information includes the respondent's gender, year of birth, occupation, and municipality of residence, if provided.

An open call for submissions was published on the website of the Finnish Literature Society.

The data are checked and processed in detail. If necessary, the data are anonymised. Finnish Social Science Data Archive 74 writings in odt format. Additionally, the data were organised into an easy to use HTML version and a CSV version. The data archived in the FSD contains only those writings that the respondent has allowed to be archived also in the FSD. Any photographs submitted with the writings have not been archived at FSD. Competition entries submitted in paper format are not included in the data. The complete material is available in the archives of the Finnish Literature Society (SKS). The data may contain identifiers that have not been anonymised (e.g. person names, information on place of residence, names of work places and such). When publishing quotations from the data, users need to consider very carefully in each specific case what information needs to be removed or altered according to research ethical guidelines. The dataset is (B) available for research, teaching and study. The data and its creators shall be cited in all publications and presentations for which the data have been used. The bibliographic citation may be in the form suggested by the archive or in the form required by the publication. Notify FSD of all publications where you have used the data by sending the citation information to user-services.fsd@tuni.fi. The original data creators and the archive bear no responsibility for any results or interpretations arising from the reuse of the data. To prevent identification of respondents, the names of the respondents, the names of third parties, and possible other direct identifiers have been removed from the writings at FSD.
