Abstract
The survey concentrated on work and working life in the Baltic countries Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia. A number of questions focused on the respondents' working community, nature of work (e.g. degree of independence, physical or mental strain), management, decision-making at the work place and wages. The respondents' work history was charted. Family life, leisure habits, household composition, childhood, economic situation, and social participation were studied. The survey carried a set of attitudinal statements relating to women's position, poverty, social problems, equality, income disparity, and freedom of expression. Opinions on who should take care of certain services (government, private service providers, municipality, citizens themselves) were charted. The respondents were asked which party they would vote for if parliamentary elections were held right at that time. Views were probed on market economy, privatisation, democracy, integration to Europe, citizenship, political participation, human rights, and relations between different nationalities. Social networks and restitution of property after the Soviet era were also charted. Entrepreneurs and farmers were asked about the number of their employees, reasons for starting farming or establishing a business, how they had raised the initial capital for investments, and what kind of difficulties they had experienced. Plans for the future and opinions on the role of the state vis-à-vis enterprise were investigated.
Background variables included the respondent's sex, year of birth, working hours per week, industry of employment, main economic activity, workforce size, payment system, occupation, nationality, marital status, number of children, housing, education and occupation of the spouse, occupation of parents and economic situation of the household. Part of the questions in the survey were the same as in FSD1045 Change in Occupational Structure and Social Status in Finland 1994.
