Abstract
The survey of alcohol use was conducted by the weekly supplement NYT of the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat in 2002. It was directed to all readers of the newspaper aged 18 or over. The data contain the structured parts of the survey. The number of respondents was 4542. The respondents were asked at what age they had been drunk for the first time and what had happened on that occasion. Questions also covered the respondents' drinking habits, how often they were drunk, where and with whom. Favourite drink (beer, wine, cider, liquor, punch etc) and drug use were studied. Finally, the respondents were asked what the most pleasant and unpleasant thing in being intoxicated was.
Background variables included the respondent's age, sex, occupation and the drinking habits of parents.

Completeness of Data and Restrictions
The variable q8_2 "When do you drink alcohol? During festivals" has only values 0 due to a failure at the time of data collection. With Internet surveys it is impossible to control whether anyone responds to the survey more than once.
The survey contained several open-ended questions which are not included in the data. Letters sent by readers in connection with the survey and the responses of those who filled in a paper questionnaire are not included.
Weighting
There are no weight variables in the data.
