Abstract

A case study on references to homosexuality in Finland's leading national newspaper Helsingin Sanomat between December 2002 and February 2003. There is a monthly summary of how many times homosexuality had been mentioned and in which section of the newspaper. More detailed information on the references to homosexuality, and on the story/article/news item in which they appeared are also provided.

The dataset is only available in Finnish.

During the data collection period, sentences in which homosexuality was mentioned appearing in the Helsingin Sanomat were written down (a maximum of three sentences even when the article focused mainly on homosexuality). All references containing the words "homosexuality", "homosexual", "lesbian", "gay", "same-sex couple", "registered partnership", or "sexual minority" and their variations and synonyms were included as well as any other clear references to same-sex intercourse or relationship.

Completeness of Data and Restrictions

The data contain all edited textual material in the paper that contained references to homosexuality. Images, advertisements and contents of the Events section were not included in the data.
