Abstract

The survey charted the employment situation of persons who had obtained a postgraduate degree from the University of Tampere in the year 2002. The data were collected in 2004. The respondents were asked about their previous studies, current employment situation and nature of the work, and whether the job was commensurate with their qualifications and whether a postgraduate degree was necessary for it. Experiences of working or studying abroad were studied. Participation in a graduate school was surveyed.

Some questions covered respondents' work history between the graduate and postgraduate degrees. Respondents were also asked whether they had stopped gainful employment for postgraduate studies and how had they financed their studies. One topic pertained to job searching: job searching methods used, employment sectors and type of employers approached were investigated. Respondents were asked why they had wanted a postgraduate degree. Opinions on whether the degree has enhanced or hindered their career opportunities were charted. Background variables included respondent's gender and field of study.

Gender and field of study variables were obtained from the Tampere University student register.

The questionnaire was sent to all persons who had obtained a postgraduate degree at the University of Tampere in 2002 (altogether 141 persons). The data were collected in the spring of 2004.

Completeness of Data and Restrictions

The group of respondents includes one person who graduated with both a licentiate and a doctorate in 2002. S/he can be identified from the data on the grounds of questionnaire number.

"Other, please specify"-type open-ended responses were removed from the data, along with responses to questions 7.1 and 16.1 and to questions about previous studies. In addition, information about job title (q5_1 and q5_2), working/studying abroad (q7) and degree level (licentiate/doctorate) were removed during archiving to prevent identification, and in the "field of study" variable, smaller categories were categorised together with larger ones.

Weighting

There are no weight variables in the data.
