Abstract

The survey, conducted by the University of Tampere for its second-year students in 2010, examines tutoring, progress with studies, and planning of studies.

Studies were first charted by asking the respondents to what extent they agreed with a number of statements relating to studies and study progress (e.g. "University studies have met my expectations", "I have progressed in my studies according to my plans"). Regarding tutoring and guidance, satisfaction with student tutoring and guidance provided by the department were surveyed.

Planning of studies was examined with questions about the usefulness of the personal study plan (HOPS), support received from the university when planning studies, and own initiative in searching for information supporting planning. Things that had negatively affected progress of studies were charted. Relating to employment, the respondents were asked whether they had worked during the academic year, and which line of work they aimed at after their graduation and later in their career.

Finally, the respondents were asked whether they studied full-time or part-time, which educational institution and field of study they had primarily wanted to be accepted into when they had applied, and whether they planned to go on student exchange.

Background variables included the respondent's age, gender, education prior to university studies, and number of credits.

Students in the University of Tampere who had been granted a right to study in 2009 and who had enrolled as 'present' for the autumn semester 2010 (excluding students who had been granted a right to study for a higher academic degree only (e.g. only a Master's degree without a Bachelor's degree))

The survey was sent to all students in the University of Tampere, who had been granted a right to study for a higher academic degree (Master's) in autumn 2009. The population of the survey was 1,320 students, out of whom 456 responded to the survey. Contact details were obtained from the student register of the University.

Completeness of Data and Restrictions

As requested by the data depositor, the following variables have been removed from the data: questions relating to orientation sessions (q9 - q11), planning of studies - first section (q11 and q12), ease of progressing in studies in the University of Tampere (q22), feedback and comments (q32), and respondents' questions about studies (q33). The data do not contain open-ended questions, and background variables considering field of study, and school.

There are no weight variables in the data.
