Abstract
The dataset contains 149 sexual life histories written by Finnish men and women for a national writing competition, advertised in popular magazines in 1992. The autobiographies were collected as part of the FINSEX research project studying Finnish sexuality. In the writing competition invitation, participants were asked to describe significant events, issues, experiences and feelings related to their sexual history, sexual life at that moment, and own sexuality in general, including sexual identity. While the participants were asked to write freely, they were also given a broad schema they could use to direct their narratives. The length of the autobiographies varied from one to 46 pages.
Background information included the participant's gender, age, occupation or other economic activity, and involvement in and type of couple relationship.
The dataset is only available in Finnish, with the exception of one autobiography available in Swedish.

Sampling Procedure
Non-probability: Availability
The invitation to participate in the writing competition was advertised in several popular magazines. Interested participants were asked to phone the researchers in order to receive a brochure about the competition. Altogether 177 texts were submitted and 160 of these were deposited with FSD for archiving. In the end, 149 texts were suitable for archiving. The data do not include texts whose authors did not allow reuse for research purposes.

Completeness of Data and Restrictions
All identifying information about the participants and third persons that could enable identification of the participants was removed from the texts. These include, among others, places of residence and birth, and employment and occupation. If a participant declared that they had used made-up names in their text, the names were left intact. Otherwise all names were replaced by randomly selected pseudonyms at FSD. Other changes made in the text by FSD are marked with [square brackets].
11 texts were not included in the archived data, because their authors did not want them to be archived.
