Abstract
The survey charted opinions on the climate of debate and debate participation as well as values and attitudes regarding various societal affairs in Finland. The survey was funded by e2.
First, the respondents were asked to what extent they agreed or disagreed with a number of statements relating to, for example, the functionality of Finnish democracy, necessity of austerity measures, immigration, protection of Finnish culture from outside influence, and relations with Russia and the EU. Opinions on national defence and security were examined with questions on the maintenance of national security, voluntary national defence and mandatory national defence training for women.
Next, attitudes towards the Finnish climate of debate and debate participation were charted with questions relating to, for example, deliberate provocation in Finnish discussion, social media and traditional media, personal ability to evaluate the actions of decision-makers, and perceived likelihood of being able to influence societal affairs. Opinions on carrying out illegal activities for a good cause were also examined. Finally, the respondents were asked to what extent they agreed or disagreed with statements regarding climate change issues, Finnish participation in solving global problems, and price of food in Finland.
Background variables included, among others, gender, age, NUTS2 and NUTS3 regions of residence, level of education, status in employment, household composition, household income and political party preference. Additionally, the respondents were asked to place themselves on the left-right and the liberal-conservative political scales.

Non-probability: Quota
The sample was drawn from among the Taloustutkimus internet panel members to form a sample that was representative of Finland's adult population with respect to age, gender and region of residence. Invitations to respond to the survey were sent by email to the target group, which was formed based on available background information. Respondents participated in the survey with a web-based questionnaire (CAWI) secured with usernames and passwords. The responses were saved on the Taloustutkimus server where they could be accessed for analysis.
