Abstract
The study surveyed the life situations and well-being of intravenous drug users as well as factors affecting their well-being. The data were collected as part of the research programme "Sumuisten sielujen hyvinvointi (SUMU)" led by professor Juho Saari examining disadvantaged groups in Finnish society. The project received a small funding from the city of Kuopio in the pilot phase.
First, the respondents' satisfaction with their lives overall was examined, and they were presented with attitudinal statements concerning their own well-being and life management. Next, it was charted which services or social security benefits they or their family members had received during the previous two months. Satisfaction with the services was also covered along with their own motivation for change. Respondents at the service points of the Helsinki Deaconess Institute (HDL 1-3) were asked additional questions concerning e.g. how they thought their life would turn out a year after the time of the survey.
Background variables included gender, age, education, economic activity and occupational status, housing tenure, whether the respondent had utilised the assistance of a food bank / breadline within the previous year, drug convictions within the previous two years, age when the respondent began using intravenous narcotics, religious affiliation, household composition, and income.

Sampling Procedure
Non-probability: Availability
The data totals 526 respondents comprising intravenous drug users who were clients at eight municipal substance abuse advisory service points. All potential participants were given a chance to respond, and it was completely voluntary and anonymous. Recruitment of potential respondents depended on an estimation of the client's state of mind and possible inebriation.
The respondents filled in the questionnaire during their visit to the substance abuse advisory service point. An employee or a research assistant was present during responding, and the respondents were assisted in filling in the questionnaire if necessary.

Completeness of Data and Restrictions
The questionnaire was based on the original data collection in Kuopio. "Portti" in the archived questionnaire means the respondent's local substance abuse advisory service point. In the data, names and locations of the service points were replaced at FSD with "[own service point]".
To prevent identification of respondents, FSD removed a variable denoting nationality and categorised variables concerning age, responding location and prison convictions.
A categorised variable based on the income variable was removed during archiving due to unclear coding. Variables K8_1-K10 in the data concern only respondents at Helsinki Deaconess Institute (HDL 1-3).
Weighting
There are no weight variables in the data.
