Abstract

The dataset consists of 32 texts on Finnish experiences of voluntary work with asylum seekers. Data collection was organised by the Finnish Literature Society.

In the writing guidelines, the participants were asked to write about their reasons for doing voluntary work with asylum seekers, their experiences regarding the work, and the relationship they had with the asylum seekers. The respondents were asked to describe their experiences of both short-term and long-term voluntary work. The respondents discussed voluntary work in reception centres, social media use in their work, and different personal encounters with the asylum seekers.

Background information included the participant's name or pseudonym, occupation, year of birth, area of residence and gender. The data were organised into an easy to use HTML version at FSD.

The dataset is only available in Finnish.

Completeness of Data and Restrictions

To prevent identification of participants, mentions of writers' names and other direct identifiers referring to the writer or third persons were removed. The names of persons mentioned in the texts were either removed or replaced with a pseudonym if they occurred more than once. Additionally, indirect identifiers, such as specific times or location information, were coarsened in some responses. A text that can be found on the Internet was removed from one response. 11 photographs and two text attachments sent with the texts were removed before archiving due to copyright issues. Changes made at FSD were marked with [square brackets].

46 responses were received. This dataset consists of the 32 responses where the writer consented to the archiving of their text at FSD. Some writers included photographs with their texts. The archived data include one photograph. The complete data are stored at the archive of the Finnish Literature Society (SKS).
