Abstract

The data contain the transcripts of five focus group interviews exploring the views of upper secondary school students on teacher education and teaching profession in Finland. The students were at the stage when they started planning their future studies in tertiary education. The data are part of a research project on the attractiveness of programmes leading to a teaching degree, conducted by the Finnish Institute for Educational Research at the University of Jyväskylä and funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Main themes included educational choices, professions of interest to participants, reasons for being interested in those professions, the impact of the first-time allocation quota in universities for their educational choice, intention to apply or not for a place in teacher education and reasons why, different programmes leading to a teaching degree, potential career choices with that degree, image of teacher education and teaching profession as well as the advantages and disadvantages of working as a teacher. The data do not contain any background information for the participants.

The dataset is only available in Finnish.

FSD holdings also contain another dataset related to the same research project: FSD3459 Attractiveness of Teacher Education: Surveys 2020.
