Abstract

Deliberative Mini-Public's on the Satakunta 2050 Regional Plan aimed to find out the views of Satakunta residents on the future of the region. The data consists of a recruitment questionnaire and pre-, mid- and final questionnaires addressed to the participants of the deliberative mini-publics. The data was collected as part of the Participation in Long-Term Decision-Making (PALO) research project, funded by the Strategic Research Council of the Research Council of Finland.

First, respondents were asked for their views on various statements concerning Satakunta and its future. Questions were asked about issues such as security, culture and environmental protection. Respondents were asked to rate which issues were most important for the development of the region. In terms of democracy and decision-making, the survey asked how much trust was placed in various social institutions and political decision-makers, what was important in decision-making, and how well democracy was seen to work in Finland.

Regarding the future, respondents were asked how much decision-making should take future generations into consideration, and how much respondents themselves thought about the future of the region from the perspective of future generations. There was also interest in the feelings that the respondents had about the future of Satakunta. Finally, the participants in the deliberative mini-publics were asked about the effectiveness of the mini-public and their motives for participating in it.

The alphabetic characters in the variable names indicate which questionnaire the questions are from: rs = recruitment questionnaire, pre = pre-questionnaire, post = mid-questionnaire, end = end-questionnaire. Questions that are repeated in the questionnaires in a similar way are numbered in the same way in each questionnaire. Respondents who participated in the mini-public can be distinguished from other respondents, for example by using the Treatment-variable.

Background variables included age group, gender, place of residence, mother tongue, life situation, education and political party of choice.

Sampling Procedure

Probability: Simple random

The recipients of the recruitment survey (6000 persons) were selected from the register of the Digital and Population Data Services Agency by a simple random sampling of Satakunta residents aged 15-80 years. In connection with the recruitment survey, respondents were offered the opportunity to volunteer for a deliberative mini-public. All those who expressed their willingness to participate were invited to take part in the mini-public.

Those who confirmed their participation were sent a pre-questionnaire before the mini-public, and participants in the mini-public completed one questionnaire during the mini-public and one at the end of it. A total of 55 participants took part in the mini-public, of whom 53 completed all three questionnaires.

Completeness of Data and Restrictions

For identification reasons, the researcher has reclassified the respondents' mother tongue, gender and year of birth. In addition, the researcher has removed open-ended responses from the data. For the same reason, the variables rs_v10other rs_v11other rs_v18other end_v37other, which contained open-ended responses were removed from the data at FSD. From the open-ended variables that were left to the data, possible identifiers that could help to identify the respondent were removed, such as responses that contained more detailed information about the respondent's place of residence. The anonymisation made by FSD are marked with [brackets].

Weighting

There are no weight variables in the data.
