Abstract

The dataset consists of self-administered written texts on the lives of pet dogs. The data were originally collected for a Master's thesis.

The writing guidelines directed participants to write about the lives of their pet dogs. Respondents could describe individual events or outline their dog's life story. Respondents were given questions to facilitate writing, e.g. what kind of character their dog has and what kind of life experiences their dog has had. Respondents were also asked about their dog's everyday habits and whether their dog has any special skills.

Background information included the participant's gender, age group, and type of location. The data were organised into an easy to use HTML version at FSD.

The dataset is only available in Finnish.

The researcher shared the writing invitation in the Koirat ("Dogs") Facebook group, which had over 60 000 members at the time of the data collection, and on several other animal-related Facebook pages. In addition, the researcher distributed a printed copy of the writing invitation on a number of notice boards in three different cities, including shops, pet shops, petrol stations and libraries.

36 files in TXT format. Additionally, the data were organised into an easy to use HTML version and a CSV version.

Completeness of Data and Restrictions

To prevent identification of participants, identifiers such as the names of participants and third persons, references to locations and occupations were removed from the data at FSD. In addition, sensitive content was removed from one of the texts. The names and breeds of the dogs have not been removed as they essential information in understanding the data.

37 texts were received in response to the writing invitation. The authors of 36 texts consented to the archiving of their text.

The data and its creators shall be cited in all publications and presentations for which the data have been used. The bibliographic citation may be in the form suggested by the archive or in the form required by the publication.
