Abstract

The aim of the survey was to get a picture of Finns' financial well-being. Respondents were asked about their housing situation and their satisfaction with their current standard of living.

Respondents assessed their own family's financial situation. Respondents were asked about the necessity or non-necessity of various goods and services for today's Finnish adults. Respondents were also asked whether they considered certain goods and services necessary for themselves. Among other things, these included a mobile phone, a car, clothing, eating out, home furnishings, getting a haircut, home insurance, and health services. Respondents were also asked to tell about their own health.

Respondents reported on how financial matters are handled in their family and whether there are income differences between spouses. Attitudes towards social security benefits and poverty were explored, for example by asking about income support clients or those in need of income support, the minimum income and whether the minimum amount of income support is sufficient as it is. Finally, respondents indicated how much they have in terms of expenses.

Background variables in the data include year of birth, gender, marital status, type of housing, size of household and number of children, region of residence at age 14 and at present, highest level of education, main activity of self and spouse, socio-economic status and monthly income of the whole family.

Sampling Procedure

Probability: Simple random

The survey was conducted as a postal survey with a sample of 5,000 respondents. The sample of the data was taken from the Digital and Population Data Services Agency's register by random sampling. The survey was conducted in three stages, by sending respondents a questionnaire and two reminder letters. Respondents also had the opportunity to fill in the questionnaire online. The sampled respondents received a link in the cover letter to complete the survey via the Webropol service. The letter provided clear instructions on how to complete the questionnaire electronically.

Completeness of Data and Restrictions

The response options for the action variable "senior official" and "junior official" are reversed in the data compared to the questionnaire. The data contain user missing values for which no further documentation is available.

The researcher has classified the variables denoting respondent's education and housing.

To prevent identification of respondents, open-ended variables were removed from the data at FSD when necessary.

Weighting

The dataset includes a weight variable "paino". Weight factors have been calculated as follows: combinations were formed according to gender, level of education and age group. Gender covers two categories: male and female, educational level three categories: primary, secondary, and tertiary, age group five categories: 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60-70. Every possible combination of these characteristics was formed, e.g. male, primary, 18-29; male, primary, 30-39; male, primary, 40-49, etc., and a total of thirty combinations were formed. For each combination, a weight factor was calculated using the formula k*N/n, where k=combination's share of the 18-70-year-old Finnish population, N=number of cases in the dataset, and n=number of cases of that combination in the dataset.
