Abstract

The dataset consists of self-administered written texts on memories related to cars and motoring. The car memories collected range from the 1930s to the present day. The data collection was organised in collaboration between the Finnish Literature Society, the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland and Espoo Car Museum.

The writing guidelines directed participants to write about their memories of driving and what cars and driving mean to them. Participants were asked to write about their most memorable car journeys and their favourite or most infuriating car. In addition, participants were invited to consider how their relationship with cars and driving had changed over the years and how they viewed the future of motoring. Many of the received responses were biographical, often covering such topics as the participants earliest memories of cars, their relationship with cars and the changes that had occurred in that relationship, and experiences related to different car brands.

Background information included the participant's gender, year of birth, occupation, and area of residence. The data were organised into an easy to use HTML version at FSD.

The dataset is available only in Finnish.

Non-probability: Availability

The invitation to participate in the study was targeted at all individuals in Finland who had memories of cars and driving. The invitation was published on the webpage of the Finnish Literature Society (SKS) and the Espoo Car Museum. Furthermore, a writing invitation was sent to regular SKS contributors. The text could be delivered using an online form on the SKS website or by letter.

47 files in ODT or PDF format. Additionally, the data were organised into an easy to use HTML version and a CSV version.

Completeness of Data and Restrictions

To prevent identification, references to the participants' names, images that contained identifiers, and other direct identifiers were removed at FSD. Additionally, the participants' exact dates of birth were replaced with years of birth. Identifiers related to any third persons were also removed from the data and the names that appeared in the texts were replaced with fictitious names if they occurred more than once. Changes made at FSD are marked with [square brackets].

53 texts were received in response to the writing invitation. Two texts were removed from the dataset because they only contained the writers' background information, and three texts were removed due to data privacy and copyright reasons. Additionally, one text was removed as it was a duplicate of another text in the dataset. The dataset does not include images as these were not delivered to FSD. The complete dataset is available from the archive of the Finnish Literature Society (SKS).

Citation Requirement

The data and its creators shall be cited in all publications and presentations for which the data have been used. The bibliographic citation may be in the form suggested by the archive or in the form required by the publication.
