Abstract
In 2023, the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) focused on national identity. The questions covered issues such as Finnishness, immigration attitudes, democracy, trust in the Finnish public sector and views on the European Union. This data consists of a questionnaire collected from Finns.
The first question asked what characteristics of people were considered important for them to be considered Finnish. Respondents' pride in Finland was measured by statements on democracy, international political influence, economic achievements, social security system, achievements in sport, art and literature, the military, history and equality.
The following statements covered a wide range of national and international policies, including protecting Finland's economy, environmental pollution, looking after Finland's own interests and the right of foreigners to buy land. Questions were also asked about transnational enterprises, free trade and international organisations and associations. Several statements dealt with different racial and ethnic groups, immigrants and their culture.
Questions were also asked about trust in the Finnish public sector and views on personal influence and democracy. Questions on the European Union asked, for example, whether Finland benefits from membership of the Union and whether Finland should follow the Union's decisions even if it disagrees with them. It was also asked whether the European Union should have more or less power than the national governments of the Member States and how the respondent would vote if a referendum were held on Finland's continued membership of the European Union.
Background variables included, among others, the respondent's gender, year of birth, marital status, level of education, occupation, voting behaviour, gross income, current labour market status, household size and metropolitan area. In addition, background variables included the education, occupation and labour market status of the respondent's spouse.

Sampling Procedure
Probability: Systematic random
Respondents were selected by systematic random sampling from a population database. The sample size was 3100 persons, of whom 1369 responded to the survey. Before sampling, the respondents were sorted by municipality code and date of birth. Respondents were contacted a maximum of five times during the survey, by letter invitations, e-mail and paper forms. The total loss was 1731, of which 9 were drop-outs and 10 were refusals.

Completeness of Data and Restrictions
Two questionnaires are attached. One is a paper form sent by post, the other an internet form. The question sections of the questionnaires are identical in content.
For identification reasons, the data have been classified at FSD by the regional variable (nuts2), the country of birth of the parents (k65a and k65b) and the respondent's gross income (k62). In addition, for Åland respondents, identifying information on the following variables has been removed: group membership, occupation and religion.
Weighting
The data contain two weight variables, which were created using a calibration method in order to improve estimation efficiency and to correct non-response bias. The weights are based on the following population distributions: 1) gender, 2) age groups (15-24, 25-34, ..., 65-74), 3) NUTS3 areas so that Greater Helsinki area was treated separately, and 4) municipality type (urban, semi-urban, rural). The first weight variable (otospaino) weights the results to match the whole Finnish population (the sum of the weights equals the size of the Finnish population). The second weight variable (analyysipaino) does not produce this kind of extension (the weighted mean is 1 and the sum equals the number of cases). Both variables are based on the same calibration process, only the scale is different.
