Abstract

The survey was carried out to develop the website climateguide.fi, which provides information on climate change, and to assess the awareness and use of the website among municipal and wellbeing services county councilors. In addition, questions were asked about Finnish society and democracy in general. The respondents are municipal and wellbeing services county councilors. The data was collected as part of the Politician Panel, which is part of The Finnish Research Infrastructure for Public Opinion (FIRIPO).

First, the respondents were asked whether they had used the Climateguide website and what topics related to climate change they were interested in. In addition, the respondents were asked in what form they felt they needed information on climate change and what kind of information on climate change was needed for municipal decision-making. This was followed by questions on how satisfied the respondent is with the functioning of democracy in Finland. Also, statements on general issues related to Finnish society and politics were presented. Finally, statements were made about the Climateguide website.

Background variables include party membership, size of municipality of residence, age group, gender, mother tongue, level of education and electoral district.

Around 95% of the Finnish municipal councilors were invited to join the panel, which totaled 8999 at the time of the invitation in spring 2020. New recruitment rounds have taken place in 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023. In the 2023 recruitment round, an invitation was also sent to the wellbeing services county councilors. After the 2021 municipal elections, those who were not re-elected have been removed from the panel. At the time of sending this survey in October 2023, 1,162 people had registered for the panel. An invitation to participate in the survey was sent by email to the people on the panel.

Completeness of Data and Restrictions

The researcher has anonymised the data by replacing the variable indicating the municipality of residence with a variable indicating the electoral district to prevent identification of respondents. The researcher has also removed open-ended variables from the data.

Helsinki and Uusimaa electoral districts have been combined at FSD for identification reasons.

Weighting

There are no weight variables in the data.
