Abstract

The data consists of writings in which respondents describe the situations in which they have experienced shame or embarrasing moment at work.

In an open writing invitation, respondents were asked to write a description/story, as detailed as possible, of a situation in their work where they experienced shame. If the respondent wished to write about more than one situation of shame, he/she was asked to fill in a separate response form for each. The respondent was allowed to write in any way he/she wished, highlighting the issues that he/she considered important. In the writing invitation, the respondents were instructed to write about, for example, what they thought the situation was about, what happened, who was involved, how the situation developed and/or what they believed was the cause of their own feelings of shame.

As background information, the respondents were asked about their gender, age group at the time of the incident, job title and nature of employment. The data were organised into an easy to use HTML version at FSD.

Completeness of Data and Restrictions

During the archiving process, the names of the workplaces were removed from the writings. In addition, less common job titles and, where appropriate, the exact sector of activity were also generalised.

A total of 249 writings were received, of which 208 were authorised by the author to be archived. One response was removed from the archived data set because the author set specific conditions in his text for the use of his writing.
