Abstract
Aineisto on World Values Survey -tutkimuksen Suomen kolmannen aallon aineisto. Vastaajia pyydettiin arvioimaan, mitä elämänalueita he pitävät elämässään tärkeinä, ovatko he tyytyväisiä elämäänsä ja kotitaloutensa taloudelliseen tilaan sekä millainen heidän terveydentilansa on. Lastenkasvatukseen liittyen on selvitetty mitä ominaisuuksia vastaajien mielestä lapsissa pitäisi rohkaista ja mitä lasten tulisi oppia kotoaan. Vastaajien jäsenyyttä eri järjestöissä ja yhdistyksissä tutkittiin, samoin tutkittiin vastaajien elämänodotuksia ja kokemuksia elämänhallinnasta. Ennakkoluuloja kartoitettiin kysymällä keitä vastaaja ei haluaisi naapurikseen. Vastaajilta kysyttiin myös heidän mielipiteitään ihanteellisesta lapsilukumäärästä ja naisen asemasta. Politiikkaan liittyen tutkittiin vastaajien poliittisia asenteita, suhtautumista poliittisen järjestelmämme toimintaan, hallituksen velvollisuuksiin sekä korruption ja lahjonnan laajuuteen maassamme. Lisäksi tutkittiin, mitä puoluetta vastaaja äänestäisi eduskuntavaaleissa ja mitä puoluetta ei äänestäisi missään nimessä. Vastaajilta kysyttiin myös, ovatko he työssä ja montako tuntia he työskentelevät viikossa sekä miten heidän perheellään meni taloudellisesti edellisenä vuonna. Taustamuuttujia olivat mm. siviilisääty, lasten lukumäärä, sukupuoli, ikä, koulutus, ammatti, perheen tulot.

Todennäköisyysotanta: monivaiheinen otanta
Otanta tehtiin kolmessa vaiheessa. Ensin tutkimuksen edellyttämä määrä kohdehenkilöitä jaettiin alueellisesti lääneittäin. Toisessa vaiheessa kohdehenkilöiden määrä jaettiin läänien sisällä kuntatyypeittäin. Kunnat ryhmiteltiin kuntatyypeittäin suuriin ja pieniin kaupunkeihin, maalaiskunnat kolmeen luokkaan väestön elinkeinojakauman mukaan. Kolmannessa vaiheessa tutkimuskunnista poimittiin lähtöosoitteita niiden väestömäärän edellyttämällä tavalla. Haastattelut tehtiin lähtöpistejärjestelmällä. Satunnaisesti poimituista lähtöosoitteista edeten tehtiin kuusi haastattelua. Jokaisesta haastattelun kohteena olleesta taloudesta valittiin henkilö, joka täytti valintakortin määräämät sukupuoli- ja ikäehdot.
