Abstract

The study focused on Finnish student experiences and perceptions of alcohol use. There were 241 participants from different study fields, recruited from upper secondary schools, upper secondary vocational schools, universities of applied sciences, and science universities. Data were collected through focus group discussions, and the number of participants in each group varied from three to eight. Some groups had girls or boys only but some were mixed gender groups.

Focus groups were asked to write two movie scripts, one for the funniest drinking situation possible and the other for the most unpleasant drinking situation. The participants were given a stimulation list containg examples of possible movie themes. After the movie scripts, groups discussed drinking issues and their own experiences. Some groups also discussed self-control in drinking and social activities that could form an alternative to drinking. Background information was collected with a questionnaire and included gender, year of birth, study field, prior education, living arrangement, couple relationship, region of birth, and occupation or education of the parents.

The dataset is only available in Finnish.

Students living in Finland and studying social or health sciences or business administration in vocational schools or universities, and students under the age of 18 studying metal work and machinery or vehicle technology in vocational school and students in general upper secondary school.

Groups consisting of fellow students who already knew each other were formed in slightly different ways depending on the educational institution.

With regard to vocational schools, a research assistant contacted teachers and representatives of student health care and asked them to form suitable groups of students over the age of 18.

Concerning universities of applied sciences, a research assistant asked teachers to form groups. The research assistant also recruited some groups in the cafeteria of the institution outside of classes.

The research assistants were students of the fields selected in universities and they recruited the groups out of their own acquaintances and the acquaintances of these people.

Completeness of Data and Restrictions

The data were transcribed by the researcher. Indirect and direct identifiers were removed from the transcripts during archiving. The interviewees' places of birth and residence as well as their parents' occupations were coarsened. Information on the interview location was removed as well as information on the educational institutions of underage interviewees.
