Abstract

The survey, conducted by the University of Tampere for its second-year students in 2009, examines tutoring, progress with studies, and planning of studies.

Studies were first charted by asking the respondents to what extent they agreed with a number of statements relating to studies and study progress (e.g. "University studies have met my expectations", "I have progressed in my studies according to my plans"). Regarding tutoring and guidance, satisfaction with student tutoring and guidance provided by the department were surveyed.

Planning of studies was examined with questions about the usefulness of the personal study plan (HOPS), support received from the university when planning studies, and own initiative in searching for information supporting planning. Things that had negatively affected progress of studies were charted. Relating to employment, the respondents were asked whether they had worked during the academic year and in which periods, and which line of work they aimed at after their graduation and later in their career.

Finally, the respondents were asked whether they studied full-time or part-time, which educational institution and field of study they had primarily wanted to be accepted into when they had applied, and whether they planned to go on student exchange.

Background variables included the respondent's age, gender, education prior to university studies, field of study, school, and number of credits.

Students in the University of Tampere who had been granted a right to study in 2008 and who had enrolled as 'present' for the autumn semester 2009 (excluding students who had been granted a right to study for a higher academic degree only (e.g. a Master's degree))

Total study (no sampling). The survey was sent to all students in the University of Tampere, who had been granted a right to study for a higher academic degree (Master's) in autumn 2008. The population of the survey was 1,306 students, out of whom 409 responded to the survey. Contact details were obtained from the student register of the University.

Completeness of Data and Restrictions

The data do not contain open-ended questions. As requested by the data depositor, the following variables have been removed from the data: questions relating to orientation sessions (q11, q12, q13, q14, q15, q16), planning of studies - first section (q17, q18_1 - q18_12), feedback and comments (q33, q34), respondent questions about studies (q_yht), and the background variable charting the respondent's department.

Weighting

There are no weight variables in the data.
