Abstract

The survey, conducted by the University of Tampere for its second-year students in 2013, examines tutoring, progress with studies, and planning of studies.

Studies were first charted by asking the respondents to what extent they agreed with a number of statements relating to studies and study progress (e.g. "University studies have met my expectations", "I have progressed in my studies according to my plans"). Satisfaction with student tutoring was surveyed.

Planning of studies was examined with questions about the usefulness of the personal study plan (HOPS), support received from the university when planning studies, and satisfaction with information received about Master studies. Things that had negatively affected progress of studies were charted. Several statements relating to study environment and ability to study were presented (e.g. "I have received enough constructive feedback from teachers", "Students are treated fairly and equally"). Regarding employment, the respondents were asked whether they had worked during the previous academic year.

Finally, the respondents were asked whether they studied full-time or part-time, which educational institution and field of study they had primarily wanted to be accepted into when they had applied, and whether they planned to go on student exchange.

Background variables included the respondent's age, gender, education prior to university studies, field of study, school, and number of credits.

Students in the University of Tampere who had been granted a right to study in 2012 and who had enrolled as 'present' for the autumn semester 2013 (excluding students who had been granted a right to study for a higher academic degree only (e.g. only a Master's degree without a Bachelor's degree)

The survey was sent to all students in the University of Tampere, who had been granted a right to study for an academic degree in autumn 2012. The population of the survey was 1,269 students, out of whom 348 responded to the survey. Contact details were obtained from the student register of the University.

Completeness of Data and Restrictions

The data do not contain open-ended questions. As requested by the data depositor, the following variables have been removed from the data: questions relating to orientation sessions and respondents' questions about studies (q2, q2_1, q3_1, q3_2, q3_3 ja q4; q5_1, q5_2, q5_3, q6 ja q7 and q34), and questions about competency-based curriculum (q20), development needs related to learning environments (q23), and feedback and comments (q33).
