Abstract

The data were collected for the cross-European EUROSTUDENT VIII study, forming the Finnish part of the survey. Main themes surveyed included economic circumstances and time use of students, progress in studies, international mobility, and future expectations and plans. The study was co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.

First, they were asked about the degree they were studying for, how active they were in their studies, and their beliefs and opinions about their future after graduation. Next, they were asked about previous studies, skills and jobs, participation in preparatory courses, enrolment in education and the use of JOO-studies. This was followed by questions about the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on their studies. Further questions were asked about the conditions of study and the time spent studying and working. Students were asked about their own digital skills. They were also asked about their income and expenditure and how they were distributed.

Next, students were asked about their views on international mobility, student exchanges and related enablers and barriers. These were followed by questions on mental health and well-being, and students' views on equality and any experiences of discrimination.

Background variables included age (categorised), gender, sector and field of study (categorised), year of study, language skills and parents' level of education. In addition, information on whether the respondent and his/her parents were born in Finland and whether the respondent has children.

Sampling Procedure

Probability: Systematic random

Probability: Stratified

The contact information for those invited to participate in the study were provided by higher education institutions and a register maintained by Statistics Finland that is based on the Finnish Population Information System. The sampling method was stratified systematic random sampling. The sample was divided into 6 strata: UAS hybrid teaching; small fields of education; medium fields of education; large fields of education; University of Applied Sciences Master's Degree students; foreign degree students. The sample was selected according to the student's age, gender, specific field of education and mother tongue. In addition to the strata by field of education, foreign degree students were defined as a separate stratum, as the survey also aims to obtain more detailed comparable data on them. This procedure ensures the representativeness of the sample in terms of these variables. A total of 26 000 students were sampled, of which 23 000 were Finnish and 3 000 foreign students.

Completeness of Data and Restrictions

The researcher has classified the age variable (a_ikaluokka).

The age of the youngest child and a variable describing the number of children are TOP-coded at FSD. In addition, the variables of the country of birth of the respondent and the respondent's caretakers and also, the open-ended responses have been removed at FSD for identification reasons.

No higher education variables (n1_4a-n1_4b), municipality of study variable (n1_5) or asylum seeker variable (n6_6) were submitted to FSD.

Weighting

The dataset contains two weight variables. The weight was calculated on a model basis using the so-called response propensity modeling, where the response probability for each respondent was estimated using a logistic regression model. The response probability was estimated using all available data on the student population in the population frame (found for both respondents and non-respondents), and the weight correcting for loss was calculated by taking the inverse of the estimated response propensity. The weighting model adjusts for response loss by institution of higher education, field of education, gender, age group, language and level of qualification (further distinguishing students in the UAS multiformat from daytime students).
