Abstract

The survey studied Finnish people's views on the contents of a clothing basket that enables a decent standard of living, meaning what types of clothing individuals of different ages and genders are considered to need. In addition, it explored practices related to acquiring clothing as well as needs concerning clothing care.

First, respondents were asked to assess the extent to which various clothing‑related matters are necessary in Finland in the 2020s. After this, they evaluated in more detail the clothing needs of an example person of their choosing. For this purpose, visualised example clothing lists were presented. Respondents were asked whether the presented clothing set meets the requirements of a decent standard of living for the given group. They were also asked to comment on any potential shortcomings or unnecessary items, and to assess whether any clothing items were present in excess or in insufficient quantities.

Finally, respondents were asked to evaluate the necessity of various items related to clothing care. In addition, they were asked to estimate the lifespans of different clothing items as well as the typical places of purchase for clothes, footwear, and accessories, and their attitudes toward these purchasing locations.

Background variables included the respondent's age, gender, NUTS3 region of residence, household type and composition, education, main activity, type of employment, occupation (ISCO-08), type of housing, personal and household monthly net income, and subjective financial well-being.

Sampling Procedure

Probability: Simple random

For the survey, the Digital and Population Data Services Agency selected a random sample of 10,000 Finnish-speaking people aged 15-74 living in mainland Finland, who were contacted by post in late autumn 2021. The sample included individuals who had a permanent address registered in the population information system. Individuals who had a security restriction or a direct marketing restriction registered were not included in the sample. Approximately four weeks after the first invitation letter was sent, a reminder letter was sent to those who had not yet responded. The survey itself and the data collection were carried out using the Webropol survey tool.

Completeness of Data and Restrictions

The archived questionnaire does not include the example clothing lists presented to respondents. The full questionnaire is available in the data report.

The researchers anonymized the data by removing variables that revealed the respondents' political affiliations. In addition, the researchers coded the NUTS3 region of residence based on the postal code variable and coded the occupation variable, which contained open-ended responses, into occupational groups according to the ISCO-08 classification.

To prevent identification of respondents, the postal code variable, year of birth, variables containing open-ended responses to the response option "Other, please specify", and the occupation variable containing open-ended responses were deleted from the data at FSD. For the same reason, the age variable was recoded into age groups. In addition, the numbers of adults and children living in the household were top-coded. Personal income values exceeding 9,000 euros were combined into one category. For household income, the same recoding was applied only to households with one adult.

One respondent outside the target population was removed from the data during the archiving process.

Weighting

Weighting variables have been created for the data to control for any bias caused by non-response. The calculation of the coefficients takes into account the age, gender, and education distribution of the Finnish-speaking population aged 18-74 living in mainland Finland. The "weight" variable includes gender and age, whereas the "weight2" variable includes gender, age, and education. For respondents who selected "other" or "I don't want to say" in the gender question, a weight of 1 has been assigned for all data used in the weighting.
