Sisällön kuvaus

The data contain interviews of seven male metalworkers who had been laid off from the Rauma shipyard in 2014. All interviewees were either unemployed, retired or underemployed at the time of the interview, and all of them had had a career of more than 20 years at shipyards. They were asked to tell about their own work history, their time at the shipyard, and their time unemployed.

The themes of the interview included childhood and family background, meaning of work, work community, feelings after being laid off, current everyday life, social relations after losing work, meaning of money and property, well-being and health, and unemployment more generally in Finland. Finally, the interviewees were asked to tell about their future plans.

Background information included interview date and duration as well as the age, occupation, pseudonym and gender of the interviewee. The data were organised into an easy to use html version at FSD.

The dataset is only available in Finnish.

For the interviews, the data collector picked male metalworkers laid off from the shipyard who regularly took part in a support group for laid-off persons in 2014-2016, who had worked at shipyards for at least 20 years and who had not returned to permanent employment or studies after being laid off.

The dataset includes seven TXT files with a total of 142 pages of transcribed interviews. HTML files were produced from the TXT files.

The data collector performed a preliminary anonymisation of the data (e.g. names of persons, municipalities and organisations were removed and Statistics Finland's classifications were used instead). Uncommon hobbies, diseases and positions of trust were also coarsened. The anonymisations were checked at FSD during archiving, and the ages of the interviewees were categorised and some indirect identifiers were removed to further protect confidentiality. Anonymisations performed at FSD were marked with [[double square brackets]].
