Sisällön kuvaus
The data were collected for the cross-European EUROSTUDENT VI study, forming the Finnish part of the survey. Main themes surveyed included economic circumstances and time use of students, progress in studies, international mobility, and future expectations and plans. The study was co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.
Questions covered the respondents' current programme of study, as well as satisfaction with the current programme and its contents. The survey also charted the respondents' gap years, and qualifications and employment background before enrolling in the current programme. Further questions were asked about the respondents' expectations for getting a job after graduation and the salary they expected to receive a year after graduation. Inquiries were also made about possible postgraduate studies as well as studies abroad, including time as an exchange student.
Living conditions and economic circumstances were studied with questions on housing, as well as monthly income and expenses. The respondents were asked whether they had taken out a student loan or were planning to do so, and which factors had had an impact on their decision. Time use was investigated by asking about paid work done during the semester, factors affecting progress of studies, time spent on studying per week, and whether the respondents had progressed in their studies as planned.
International mobility was investigated by asking about study periods abroad and other issues related to study abroad (funding, expectations, reasons, obstacles).
Personal conditions were further studied by asking the respondents whether they had children and how many, and whether the was anything that hindered their studies (e.g. long-term health conditions, learning difficulties, disabilities). Some questions focused on family background, surveying the education level and social standing of the respondents' parents.
Background variables included, among others, the respondent's age (categorised), gender, language skills, country of birth, field of study, year of study, whether the respondent was a student at a university or a university of applied sciences, and whether the respondent had children. The education level and countries of birth of the respondent's parents were also surveyed.

Otantamenetelmä
Probability: Systematic random
Probability: Stratified
The contact information for those invited to participate in the study were provided by higher education institutions and a register maintained by Statistics Finland that is based on the Finnish Population Information System. The sampling method was stratified systematic random sampling. The sample was divided into 4 strata: Finnish university students, foreign university students, Finnish university of applied sciences (polytechnics) students, and foreign university of applied sciences students. For each stratum, participants were sampled from a sampling frame that sorted by institution ID, gender, and field of study. The procedure ensures the representativeness of the sample with respect to those variables. A total of 24,000 students were selected for the sample, including 19,000 Finnish and 5,000 foreign students. The sample size of Finnish and foreign students in university and university of applied sciences strata was determined by proportional quota.

Aineiston käytössä huomioitavaa
The researcher has removed variable q5_4 (respondent's mother tongue) from the data and categorised variable bv1 (age). To prevent identification of respondents, variables q1_7_2, q1_11_2, q4_3_2 (destinations of past or future studies abroad) were removed from the data, variable q1_6b (field of study) was coarsened, and variable q5_7 (age of youngest child) was top-coded.
The data delivered to FSD did not include the higher education institution variables (q1_3a-q1_3c) or responses to open-ended questions.
Painokertoimet
The data contain two weight variables. Weights were separately calculated for each of the four strata. Base weights used in calibration for each stratum were calculated by dividing the frame population by the number of responses. Marginal distributions used in calibration were the frame population frequencies of fields of education, nine age groups, and gender distribution of students in each institution. Because the equivalent variables were available for the respondents, calibrating the weights was possible by using the CALMAR software developed by the National Institute for Statistic and Economic Studies (France). Some categories were combined. The results of the survey are weighted to be representative of degree students in universities and universities of applied sciences.
