The survey studied Finnish residents' views on the contents of a food basket that enables a decent standard of living, as well as on food preparation and acquisition. The survey explores what kind of diet everyone should have access to in Finland in the 2020s.

First, respondents were asked to what extent various food‑related goals, such as good‑tasting food, occasional treats, and eating in accordance with one's convictions, are essential for a decent standard of living. Respondents also evaluated whether an example meal plan is suitable as a basis for a dignified life and commented on adjusting it toward a more environmentally sustainable direction.

Next, the survey explored views on considering the origin of food, preferring domestic products, and reducing the environmental impacts of one's diet. Respondents were also asked about practices related to food preparation, such as how often a household can be expected to cook dinner and what the primary healthy alternative to a home‑cooked meal would be. The survey further examined attitudes toward restaurant dining, preparing festive meals, and the use of alcohol in connection with meals. Respondents also assessed the necessity of various kitchen utensils for a decent standard of living.

Background variables included the respondent's age, gender, NUTS3 region of residence, household type and composition, education, main activity, type of employment, occupation (ISCO-08), type of housing, personal and household monthly net income, and subjective financial well-being.

Otantamenetelmä

Probability: Simple random

For the survey, the Digital and Population Data Services Agency selected a random sample of 10,000 Finnish-speaking people aged 18-74 living in mainland Finland, who were contacted by post in spring 2021. The sample included people who had a permanent address registered in the population information system. The sample did not include people who had a security restriction or direct marketing restriction. After the sample was selected, the research team divided it randomly into two parts, as two different versions of the final questionnaire had been created. This solution made it possible to survey the need for kitchen utensils extensively without making the survey unreasonably long. Thus, half of the respondents evaluated one set of utensils and the other half evaluated another set. The survey itself and the data collection were carried out using the Webropol survey tool.

Aineiston käytössä huomioitavaa

Respondents were divided into two groups, each of which was asked partially different questions about the necessity of kitchen utensils.

The researchers anonymized the data by removing variables that revealed the respondents' political affiliations. In addition, the researchers coded the NUTS3 region of residence based on the postal code variable and coded the occupation variable, which contained open-ended responses, into occupational groups according to the ISCO-08 classification.

To prevent identification of respondents, the postal code variable, year of birth, variables containing open-ended responses to the response option "Other, please specify", and the occupation variable containing open-ended responses were deleted from the data at FSD. For the same reason, the age variable was recoded into age groups. In addition, the numbers of adults and of children aged 7-17 living in the household were top-coded. Personal income values exceeding 9,000 euros were combined into one category. For household income, the same recoding was applied only to households with one adult.

Painokertoimet

Weighting variables have been created for the data, which make it possible to control for any bias in the data caused by non-response. The calculation of the coefficients takes into account the age, gender, and education distribution of the Finnish-speaking population aged 18-74 living in mainland Finland. The "weight" variable includes gender and age, while the "weight2" variable includes gender, age, and education. For those who responded "other" or "I don't want to say" to the question about their gender, a weight of 1 has been assigned to all data used in the weighting.
