Sisällön kuvaus

The main themes of the Finnish Youth Survey Spring 1999 were working life and consumption. Young people were also asked questions on education, drugs, and Finland's EU presidency.

First, the respondents were asked about working and unemployment. Their employment status was charted. Those who were employed were asked about the duration and nature of their contract, and whether they felt the job was commensurate with their qualifications. Those who were unemployed were asked about the duration of unemployment and what kind of factors they thought had hindered or prevented them and young people in general from finding a job (e.g. little work experience, lack of jobs in the municipality of residence, low wage, or foreigners in Finland). The respondents were also presented with a set of attitudinal statements on working life, covering topics such as continuously educating oneself and the relationship between social security and entrepreneurship. Additionally, young people's future plans were queried. They indicated whether they were going to work or study abroad, start their own business, or apply for vocational education.

Further questions canvassed factors that influenced the respondents' consumer choices (e.g. Finnish origin, guarantee). They were also asked to name the most important factor affecting them when buying durables.

In addition, the survey briefly charted drug abuse. The respondents were presented with various statements on drugs and asked whether someone had tried to sell them drugs in the past six months.

Finally, some questions on Finland's incipient EU presidency were asked. The respondents gave their views on how important they considered that Finland influenced various issues in the EU (for instance environmental protection, equality between the sexes, securing human rights, developing the relationship between the EU and Russia).

Background variables included the respondent's age, gender, region of residence, education, and economic activity.

Finnish Youth Survey Spring 1999 was conducted in connection with the Labour Force Survey of Statistics Finland. The sample of the Labour Force Survey is drawn twice a year as a stratified random sample from the Statistics Finland population database, which is based on the central population register. The survey is a panel survey in which one person is interviewed five times. The interviews are conducted every three months apart from the fourth interview, which is conducted six months after the third interview. The first and last interviews are 15 months apart. The sample in each month consists approximately of 12,000 persons, which is, on average, every 300th person from the population. The sample consists of five rotation groups which have joined the survey in different months.

The control groups have been drawn by including each case in a single rotation group or by picking a determined number of respondents using systematic sampling. The control groups are representative of the population as such (i.e. self-weighting) but should always be studied separately in connection with the youth data because of their nature. Together with the youth data, the distributions do not tell the truth for instance about the attitudes of 15-45-year-olds or 15-64-year-olds, because the control group responses are not weighted to correspond to the entire population. Because of high response rate, weight variables are not used in Finnish Youth Survey data.

The sample in the Finnish Youth Survey Spring 1999 consisted of 1,412 Finnish-speaking young people from several rotation groups. The sample was formed by including all young people aged between 15-29. In addition, a control sample of 250 adults (aged 40-45) was formed. The total net sample size was 1,662 persons. Altogether 1,460 interviews were received. The number of non-respondents was 196 persons (i.e. 11.8%). The duration of each interview was approximately 9 minutes.
