Sisällön kuvaus

The survey, conducted by the University of Tampere for its second-year students in 2008, examines tutoring, progress with studies, and planning of studies.

Studies were first charted by asking the respondents to what extent they agreed with a number of statements relating to studies and study progress (e.g. "Studies in the University have met my expectations", "I have progressed in my studies according to my plans"). Regarding tutoring and guidance, satisfaction with student tutoring and guidance provided by the department were surveyed.

Planning of studies was examined by asking the respondents whether they had planned their studies and with whom, whether they had received sufficient support from the university when planning studies, whether their own initiative in searching for information that supported planning had been sufficient, whether they had made a personal study plan (HOPS) and whether they considered it useful.

Relating to studies at the time of the survey, the respondents were asked, among others, whether they had actively studied during the academic year, whether they had studied less in some periods than others, and whether they had studied during breaks. Things that had negatively affected progress of studies were charted. Relating to employment, the respondents were asked which line of work they aimed at after their graduation and later in their career.

Finally, the respondents were asked whether they studied full-time or part-time, which educational institution and field of study they had primarily wanted to be accepted into when they had applied, whether they planned to go on student exchange, and which groups they felt were the closest to them (e.g. university students, family and friends).

Background variables included, among others, the respondent's age, gender, field of study, school, and number of credits.

The survey was sent to all students in the University of Tampere, who had been granted a right to study for a higher academic degree (Master's) in autumn 2007. The population of the survey was 1,394 students, out of whom 479 responded to the survey. Contact details were obtained from the student register of the University.

The data do not contain open-ended questions. As requested by the data depositor, the following variables have been removed from the data: questions relating to orientation sessions (q11, q12, q13, q14, q15, q16), variable q35 ('Comments about studies in the University of Tampere'), section X in its entirety (Questions about studies?), and the background variable charting the respondent's department.
