The dataset consists of self-administered written texts on Finnish experiences of shame in working life. The data were collected for a Master's thesis that examined the causes of shame in working life.
The writing invitation was shared on social media channels. In the writing guidelines, participants were instructed to write a story in their own words about experiences of shame they had had in their working lives. The experience of shame could be a memory from years ago or an event that had happened recently, and the story could focus on a single event or describe a situation where the participant had repeatedly experienced shame at work. The participants could describe what was going on in their minds during the experience of shame and why the situation had caused them to feel shame. The guiding questions also asked the participants to write about the thoughts that they had had in response to the situation, how they had reacted and acted in the situation, and what kind of impact the experience of shame had had on themselves and others.
Background information included the participant's gender, age group, the highest education attained, and whether the participants had worked in the public sector, private sector or for a non-profit organisation during the experience of shame. The data were organised into an easy to use HTML version at FSD.
The dataset is only available in Finnish.
