Sisällön kuvaus

The survey examined the lifestyles and consumption habits of Finns by asking questions about the present and future expectations. It also covered a lot of questions on security and attitudes related to all the above-mentioned topics.

Respondents were asked about their perception of their own living standards and consumption. Respondents were also asked to compare their consumption with the "average consumer" across a wide range of consumer products. Respondents were asked which items and consumer goods they felt were essential and what they did when they were financially strapped. They were also asked what things they would do more of if they could afford it. Next, respondents were asked about their sense of belonging to different communities (e.g. work community, church). Further, respondents were asked to rate their own happiness, health, and life satisfaction.

Respondents were asked about various risks, uncertainties, and safety. They were asked to what extent different issues are risks or sources of insecurity in society (e.g. terrorism, increasing income inequality). Respondents were also asked to what extent they support or oppose different policy measures. Finally, respondents were asked about their own and their household's combined income and loans.

Background variables included the respondent's gender, age, NUTS3 region of residence, marital status, household size, number of children, level of education, economic activity, occupation, social class and political party preference.

Probability: Stratified

The survey was carried out using a mixed-methods sampling technique. The sampling was carried out as an age-stratified random sample from the population register data. The sample consisted of a total of 4001 persons and six age groups, with the following numbers of persons selected for each age group: 659 persons aged 18-27, 673 persons aged 28-37, 651 persons aged 38-47, 675 persons aged 48-56, 697 persons aged 57-65 and 646 persons aged 66-74. A covering letter and a questionnaire were sent by post to those selected in the sample, with the option of completing the questionnaire online. The questionnaires were sent twice in total, with a reminder to complete the survey in between. The final response rate to the questionnaire is 1742.

Aineiston käytössä huomioitavaa

To prevent identification of respondents, the less frequent values for household size (V6_1), number of children (V6_2, V6_3, V6_4), respondent's income (V38) and household income (V39) have been top-coded in the FSD. The open-ended responses to the response option 'Other, please specify” of the following variables were also removed from the data: V9, V10, V15, V12, V22, V27, V28, V29, k37, k38 and k39. In addition, the original id variable, the postcode variable (V3), the year of birth (V2) and the feedback (V50) have been dropped. The original occupation variables were also dropped (V11, V14, V17, V18) and in their place occupations have been left in the data as classified by the researcher according to the 2010/ISCO-08 occupational classification.

Painokertoimet

The data contains four weight variables, which make it possible to control the selection of the data by age and gender or by age alone. The sample weight variables (Otospaino) are created by age group in a stratified sampling approach, and allow to reduce the impact of different response rates for different age groups on the analysis. The population weight variable (Vaestopaino) includes sex and age groups, also stratified, but the sample has been corrected using population data. The other population weight variable (Vaestopaino2) includes sex and age of respondents, to the nearest year, so it can be used with other age groupings.
