Communities for the study were selected among the communities supported by the SGP Programme of the UNDP. The researcher visited several communities and eventually chose the Fair Trade Coffee Trail Programme in San Ramon. Four communities participated in the programme and three of these were selected for the study (La Pita, El Roblar and La Corona), because they were alike, development of tourism had been similar in them and they were pioneering communities in terms of the development of tourism in Nicaragua.
