Sisällön kuvaus

The data survey the opinions and behavior of Finns aged 15 to 74 regarding gambling. The themes covered include opinions on gambling, gambling, relationships with gambling, the gambling of close people, digital games, and health and well-being. The study was commissioned and funded by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.

First, gambling statements were presented to gauge attitudes towards gambling in general. The next questions were about gambling advertising, the location of gaming machines, government control of gambling, and the problems and harms of gambling.

Next, respondents were asked what gambling games they used to play and how often. Respondents were also asked about their experience with gambling management tools. Other questions included how much money respondents spent on gambling and the reasons for gambling. Adult respondents were then asked if they had assisted someone under 18 to gamble and, conversely, respondents under 18 were asked if they had been enabled by an adult to gamble.

In addition, respondents were asked about their attitudes towards gambling through a series of statements and about the various disadvantages associated with gambling. This was followed by questions on the gambling habits of the respondent's close relatives and any harm they may have suffered because of their gambling. Respondents were also asked whether they played digital games, i.e. video, console, computer or mobile games. Respondents were also asked about any problems they had with playing these games. The questions also asked about the respondents' health and well-being. The health and well-being questions looked at general health, sickness absence, loneliness, mood and alcohol consumption.

The following indicators have been used in the study: Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI), Short Gambling Harm Screen (SGHS-10, SGHS-18), Attitudes Towards Gambling Scale (ATGS-8), Mental Health Inventory (MHI-5), Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT-C) and Gaming Addiction Scale (GAS-7).

The background variables include gender, year of birth, marital status, education, income, labor market status and region.

Otantamenetelmä

Probability: Systematic random

The study was targeted at the population aged 15-74 living in households in mainland Finland. People living in institutions and people whose mother tongue was something other than Finnish, Swedish or Sami language were not included in the study. The sample was selected by drawing a systematic random sample from a population frame, which was formed based on the register data of the Population Register Centre and sorted according to place of residence. This ensured that a regionally representative sample was selected. Sample size was 16 250 people.

Keruumenetelmä

Self-administered questionnaire: Web-based (CAWI)

Self-administered questionnaire: Paper

Telephone interview: Computer-assisted (CATI) (The data collection of the survey changed from telephone interviews to a combination of online and postal questionnaires (N = 15 000). 5 349 people participated in the online and postal surveys. In order to assess the impact of the methodological change, a separate sample of 628 participants (N = 1250) was included in the 2023 survey data collection through telephone interviews.)

Aineiston käytössä huomioitavaa

Statistics Finland has removed all direct personal identification data (name, date of birth, personal identity code, contact details) from the survey data.

At FSD, the municipality variable was classified as a region variable for identification reasons. In addition, one open-ended response which contained detailed information about the respondent's life, was removed at FSD.

Painokertoimet

The data are weighted by age, gender, region and urban-rural classification. The survey data were weighted to match the target population of the survey. The data were subjected to both weighting and derived analysis weights. Weighting was carried out separately for each sub-sample: online survey and telephone interview: sample weight, analysis weight. Online survey: otospaino1, analyysipaino1. Telephone interview: otospaino2, analyysipaino2. The weighting is based on a calibration method in which the distributions of the selected variables estimated from the survey data are forced to match the distributions of the target population. This method aims to reduce the bias caused by non-response and to improve the efficiency of the estimation. CALMAR2, developed in France, and its logistic calibration method, with the possibility of limiting the variation of weights, were used for calibration. The weighting criteria used were age-sex distribution (by sex 15-19, 20-24, 25-34, 35-49, 50-64, 65-74; 12 categories), region (region; 18 categories) and urban-rural classification (7 categories). In the telephone interview part, the regional classification was coarsened by combining the categories Kainuu and North Karelia. Two weighting factors were created for each respondent in the survey data. The sample weights are increasing, i.e. when calculating the overall estimates, the results are considered at the level of the target population. The sum of the sample weights thus corresponds to the target population of the survey (N=3 610 339; Statistics Finland's population database November 2023). The analytical weights do not include a multiplier effect, but the values of the weights vary on both sides of one and sum to the number of respondents in the survey data.
