Sisällön kuvaus
This longitudinal study examines people's well-being and their attachment to society. The key themes of the survey include coping in Finnish society, political activity, the welfare system, the sustainability transition, health, and psychological and social resources. This dataset is the first of three surveys to be collected from the same respondents. Responses from the same individuals can be linked across datasets collected in different years.
The section on coping and success in Finnish society examined respondents' perceptions of the importance of various factors for life course, education, economic position, and social status. The section on the Finnish welfare system explored opinions on the functioning of the welfare state, taxation, public services, and social security. The sustainability transition and future challenges section addressed attitudes toward climate change and the sustainability transition, as well as the responsibilities of different parties in society. The political engagement section measured political interest, trust in institutions, voting behavior, and other forms of civic participation. The social resources section focused on trust, social support, and experiences of loneliness. The welfare, health, and psychological resources section assessed respondents' perceived well-being, health, psychological characteristics, and coping.
The design of some questions drew on sources such as Finnish National Election Studies, the European Social Survey (ESS), the Eurobarometer 2022 survey, the OECD Risks That Matter 2022 survey, and the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) 2019: Social Inequality survey.
The background variables in the dataset are, among others, gender, age, household size (categorized), marital status, level of education, party preference, health-related information and use of health care services, height and weight, life situation, supervisory position, occupation (ISCO classification), type of employment contract, employer sector, time of commute, household net income, assets and debts, housing-related information, housing costs, reason for most recent move and year of moving, response language, response date, region, and major region.

A request to complete an online survey was mailed to 16,200 people aged 18-80 living in Finland, who were selected at random from the population register of the Digital and Population Data Services Agency. The sample was stratified by age and gender. The sample for the questionnaire in Finnish consisted of 13,427 people, for the Swedish version 788 people, and for the English version 1,985 people. Respondents could request a paper copy of the survey form if they wished. Sixty-one respondents requested the Finnish-language paper form, and two requested the Swedish-language paper form. No English-language paper forms were requested. A total of 37 valid paper forms were returned. A total of 80 S- or K-market gift cards worth 50 euros were raffled off among the respondents.

Aineiston käytössä huomioitavaa
The INCOM variable (monthly net household income) contains an unusually high number of large values. Some respondents have likely reported their income on an annual basis rather than a monthly one. This should be taken into account when analyzing the data.
This dataset is the first part of a three-year follow-up study. Responses from the same respondent across different data collection rounds can be linked using the variable fsd_id.
Each respondent answered only one of questions 8-15. Randomisation was performed using the participant ID. For respondents who answered via the text message link, randomisation was based on their birthday (1-31). No answers to the randomised questions were collected from respondents who answered using the paper form.
For anonymisation purposes, the researcher has created a regional and sub-regional variable (NUTS2) to replace the ZIP code.
For anonymisation purposes, the following variables have been removed from the dataset at FSD: exact year of birth, ZIP code, number of subordinates, ages and kinship information of children in blended families, who owns the family home (open-ended question) and two open-ended questions regarding the reasons for the most recent move. In addition, the following information has been classified: variables related to household size have been classified and information removed so that the largest family size remaining in the dataset is six people. Minimum and maximum values for height and weight variables have been categorized. For respondents active in party politics, information on which party they voted for has been removed from the VOTE_else variable. Occupation has been removed if the respondent is from Åland.
Painokertoimet
The sample's representativeness can be adjusted using a weighting variable (wgt) that accounts for biases in the sample regarding gender, age, and educational level.
